Tucked behind two booths brimming
with aged dishes and doll heads,
sat a shrine to Hollywood’s Elmo.
You know, the famous Elmo Williams
who staged the battle scenes
for Tora Tora Tora.
Oh, you don’t know?
He won an Oscar for editing High Noon.
the Eastwood classic.
What? That doesn’t ring a bell.
You must be young.
Orphaned at an early age
Williams, created an impressive
resume, lived abroad
for much of his life,
really hit the big time.
Now, his biography sits
on a painted shelf
alongside some storyboard
sketches from another film.
His hat hangs lifeless
in a corner booth of the antique
store in Brookings.
